Simply...Inspired

Today I remember…..& I am ever grateful.
Hello beautiful family ~ and I mean that in the grandest of senses and largest of meanings.

F.A.M.I.L.Y.

of people who love music,

who love singing,

who love life,

& who love BEING INSPIRED.

That's what I remembered today as I spoke to a MAGNIFICENT 77 year old woman named Pat who had never heard of Eva Cassidy, but read the article written in the Santa Cruz Sentinel about our show tomorrow honoring Eva, and was INSPIRED.
Inspired by Eva's STORY - not even her music because she hadn't heard it yet…simply INSPIRED. Inspired by us for honoring her. Inspired to call,

*NOT because she wanted tickets -
"I'm too old to go out at that time of night. Tell me when you all put on a show in the afternoon…"

*NOT because she wanted to have the show at another venue closer to her home -
"I live in Soquel, but when people ask me, I tell them, don't worry about where I live - we don't want too much noise around here"

*NOT because she needed us to do anything, say anything, correct anything - just because she wanted to thank us for INSPIRING HER.
"I remember when Gershwin died at a young age - how none of us recovered from that. Sounds like she's your Gershwin…"

She wanted a cd, so I told her that she could get one online from Amazon.
"I don't know anything about that computer stuff….(and my favorite line)…I'm a number 2 pencil gal. Just stick it in the mail and I'll send you a check when I get it".

My kinda lady…

She gives me her address and out of instinct I ask for her email address.

"Don't have one of those either. No computer. Just paper and pencil."

Wow…this is awesome!   Oh how times have changed...

I remember when that was the only way I could reach someone by "mail" - it was really by MAIL! Now it's hard to believe that snail mail will actually get somewhere. I laughed when my mom called Facebook "BookFace", but actually, not only was it refreshing, it was INSPIRING! I was so inspired by talking to Pat, I closed my laptop and went for a walk OUTSIDE! :)

I think that's another reason we are all so drawn to Eva's voice. It's simple ~ pure and true. I know that's why I am, and why the title of the new album "Simply Eva" is so perfect. Just her voice and a guitar. I was amazed how many songs we chose to put on our album are on Simply Eva as well. "I Know You By Heart", one of the cuts on Simply Eva, I recorded 4 years ago with just a cello and a penny whistle & will be on my new album coming out this summer called "Being In Love". It's such a wonderful song - again - simple, pure, and true.

It still amazes me that this woman who sang from her heart has inspired a whole other generation of people - no age limit required - to not only listen to great music, but to listen to all types of music, broaden their horizons, and in turn, meet all types of people.

So, here's to being INSPIRED!

& if you're in the neighborhood saturday night, and are so inclined and inspired, come on over to Kuumbwa Jazz in cool, hip Santa Cruz, CA for a little night of fun, folks, & fabulous music.
Take it easy & strive to inspire...

With love,

CD Release party in Berkeley

Hello everyone!!!

We had a huge successful evening for our CD of "To Eva With Love" release in Berkelely, CA at The Jazzschool! It was overly sold out, standing room only and the venue was turning people away.

Many of the people who came were Eva Cassidy fans and of course our friends and family were all there! It was such a warm and enthusiastic audience, really touching. Eva Cassidy fans came up to us after and said that we captured the spirit and essence of Eva with out it copying or sounding like what she did. That was the biggest compliment because that is what we meant to do.

We had an Eva alter at the front of the room with her picture and some candles and flowers. We also had a picture of her on stage that Ami and I could see as we sang. We sang all the songs from the "To Eva With Love" with the original band, Wayne Wallace, John Santos, David Belove, David Flores, Simon Rochester and Vince Mellone.

Highlights of the day were being on the front page of the Datebook in SF Chronicle, being mentioned as the #1 thing to do on NPR, selling out the show and meeting Eva Cassidy fans we had never met before. We sold lots of CDs and autographed them. It was a wonderful night to remember!

Next show is in Santa Cruz at Kuumbwa 1/29/11. Hope to see you there!

If you can't come to the show, you can buy our CD here:

Thank you!

With Gratitude

Hello everyone!

Well, you probably heard, our album came out this week! We did our best to tell the world about it. Please help us by letting your friends know that it is available.

On our release day, we had the pleasure of being interviewed by pop music critic Aiden Vaziri for the San Francisco Chronicle. He brought up some really good questions that we would like to further explain here. The feature article will be in Wednesday's paper.

First, we want to thank everyone for their tremendous support for our tribute to Eva Cassidy "To Eva With Love". The full title of the CD is "To Eva, With Love: A Celebration of Eva Cassidy" because that is the intention behind this album. No one, NO ONE can sing like Eva Cassidy, so we didn't even try. We did not intend to mimic or copy Eva Cassidy, instead we wanted to celebrate her life and the inspiration and joy she left us. With this intention, we started with her arrangements and then we followed our hearts and expressed freely!

The biggest gift that Eva gave us was the idea that you can sing any kind of music as long as it is beautiful. She didn't get stuck in a box of just one genre of music. So we followed her down that path. We made an album that combined folk, jazz, rock and pop. We brought together amazing musicians of all genres. We thought the best way to honor Eva Cassidy was to follow her example, to sing her arrangements in our own way. That is the concept behind "To Eva With Love".

We have heard positive feedback from the most important people, Eva Cassidy's parents, Hugh and Barbara Cassidy and her biographer and estate lawyer, Elana Byrd. Knowing that they enjoyed the CD and understand our intentions is the most important part of this journey. Also important to us is that this CD helps the world remember Eva Cassidy and the incredible life lessons she has to offer along with her unparalleled voice.
